Attracting and retaining talent is essential to scaling your business successfully. This is especially true for your “A” Players. Let’s continue visiting with our friend Frank.
Frank was sitting in his office feeling great about his team and the company in general. He was feeling particularly good about how competent and caring his team members were. Every single team member was high performing in their role, and they were all strong team players because they knew how to leverage teamwork to get more done.
Pipedream? I don’t think so. A lot of being happy and successful in life is knowing what you can control and what you can’t. If you’re the boss, you can control the quality of the team members you add to your team.
“A” Players want to be around other “A” Players. They want to be around other people who are good at what they do, and they want to be part of a high-performance team.
For 30 years I’ve been doing a final vetting assessment of potential key employee hires, i.e., usually someone in a key leadership role before they receive an offer of employment. I can’t tell you how many times the process goes like this:
Before the hire
Me: “Do you need an “A” (top 10%), “B” (above average), or “C” (average) Player for this position?
Them: “Oh, we MUST have an “A” Player for this position.
After they’ve hired a “C” Player
Me: “I’m confused. I thought you said you needed an “A” Player for this position. What changed?”
Them: “Well, we really needed to fill this position in a hurry, and we were having trouble finding someone really good, so we decided to move ahead with this person.”
When it comes to competition in the marketplace, a team of “A” Players will crush a team of “C” Players every time. Imagine your local high school team playing the Atlanta Falcons. The outcome isn’t pretty, is it?
To avoid this kind of result, take the time and use the tools to add “A” Players to your team. It will be well worth the time and money.
