Entrepreneurs Tend to Suck at Delegation

Yep, unfortunately it’s true, entrepreneurs tend to struggle with delegation. If we were creating a profile of the average entrepreneur it would look something like this:

·         Intelligent

·         Confident

·         Risk taking

·         Optimistic to a fault

·         Broad skillset

·         Good sales skills

Okay, so now this leader has launched a business and has a going concern. They decide they want to scale up, and they have a revelation that there are only 24 hours in a day.

To create this growth, they need to delegate more tasks to existing team members or add new team members. They think to themselves, “Geez, I know we need to expand our marketing effort, but I’m so good at it, I hate to let go of it and put someone else in charge of it. I worry that they won’t do it as well as I can or exactly like I would do it.”

The entrepreneur has two basic options. Option 1: Do everything yourself and don’t scale up. Option 2: Add team members you can trust and delegate.

Delegation best practices:

·         Add team members you’re confident you can delegate to

·         Be clear on the measurable outcomes that you want

·         Give the person autonomy to do it their way as long as they get results

·         Schedule regular check-ins to feel comfortable that things are going well

·         Use the check-ins for praising good work and coaching when needed
