Okay, here’s the scenario. You need a CEO for your company that you’ve scaled up over the years with blood, sweat, and tears.
This is the most important hire you’ll ever make because your future success and happiness literally depend on getting this right. You’ve identified the top five predictors of success for the position. They are:
1. Integrity: team member motivation and teamwork are built on trust
2. Intelligence: the best single predictor of general achievement
3. Empathy: caring about followers is the best single predictor of leader success
4. Passion for the position: caring about the work guarantees high motivation
5. Skills for the position: demonstrated skills required to be successful in this role
After your interview with a candidate, you rate him 1-5 on how strong he is for each major predictor of success, and here’s what you get:
1. Integrity: 1—consistent history of dishonesty and criminal activity
2. Intelligence: 3—okay, but poor rational analysis of situations and solutions
3. Empathy: 1—doesn’t care about the feelings and needs of others
4. Passion for the position: 5—very excited about taking the position
5. Skills for the position: 1—consistent history of failure, multiple bankruptcies, etc.
What do you think? Would you offer this candidate the job to run your most valuable asset and to be the keeper of your future success and happiness?
