Get Feedback, Get Richer

Most of us have at least some dread when asking for feedback on our performance from others. Some portion of this dread typically is driven by our own perfectionistic self-doubts about whether we’re “good enough.”

Turns out, however, that it’s better to know than not know. Research shows that leaders who regularly ask for feedback on their performance tend to become more successful over time, and those who don’t ask for feedback tend to become less successful over time.

Keep in mind, however, that all feedback isn’t created equally. There will always be folks who: a) have an axe to grind because they aren’t getting exactly what they want regardless of how it affects the rest of the team, or b) always blame others for their lack of success and happiness. That comes with the territory, and this feedback isn’t useful.

Instead, look for trends and convergence in the feedback. If lots of folks are saying something similar, the feedback may be worth paying attention to. This goes for things you’re doing well that you can pat yourself on the back for, as well as opportunities for improvement that will make you more successful and happier.
