Why Most Movies Suck Today

I consider myself a true cinephile—I love movies! I love “suspending reality” and being transported into another world for a time.

It’s not uncommon for me to watch my favorite movies many times over the years. I’d much prefer to watch what I know is a great movie than take a chance on most the movies coming out these days.

What happened? The bottom line is the bottom line, i.e., the “money guys” have more control in today’s movies. They tend to skip right over the artistic component and contribution of the movie and anticipate how they can make the most money from the film.

No one would be so naive as to say that folks shouldn’t try to make good money with movies. They’re expensive and time-consuming to produce, so the investors of time and money deserve a good return on their investment.

The problem is more about balance. Movies, business, and life are about risk and reward. If the MBAs controlling movies these days are unwilling to take artistic risks, then they are left with just reproducing the same old tired tropes that have already been done to death.

On the other extreme, I’ve seen some movies that are so “avantgarde” and self-indulgent that it seems that no thought was given to how they would be received emotionally or financially. This isn’t what I’m pitching either.

My view is that there’s a moderate-risk balance in movies, business, and life that achieves a satisfying emotional and financial outcome for you and your customers. For goodness, sake, let’s make more good movies.
