Are You a Creator or a Critic?

All said and done, do you primarily create solutions to problems and take advantage of opportunities, or do you just criticize what others have done?

Of course, you need a balance of both skills to be successful in business and in life, but which way do you lean? I know leaders who spend a great deal of time just finding fault with what others have done and with the world in general.

Being around these folks is a drag. It’s annoying because they always seem to be angry but also don’t seem to have creative solutions to the things they’re complaining about. It seems that their world view is focusing on the negative and ranting about how things don’t meet their expectations.

As the leader of an organization, you have great power and control. If your example to your followers is one of general negativity and criticism, then they will be afraid to take the reasoned risks necessary to take your business to the next level of success. The standing order of the day in that kind of culture is to “stay out of trouble” so you don’t get criticized instead of creating the continuous improvement and innovation necessary for sustained success.

The same thing occurs with your personal life and overall happiness. We all know people who constantly complain but seem to be fearful of trying to create something better. Sitting back and criticizing others’ efforts doesn’t require you to take any risk to create solutions, does it? Who wants to be around that vibe on a regular basis?

Of course, we all need critical thinking skills so we can evaluate what’s working and what isn’t in our businesses and in our life, so being a “Pollyanna” isn’t the answer either. It’s about balance and primary focus.

BTW, I don’t particularly like the phrase “critical thinking skills.” I think “evaluative thinking skills” is a better descriptor of an effective evaluation process. How would you followers describe you—as a Creator or a Critic?
