What Are My Blind Spots?

This question is a nominee for one of the funniest questions of all time. Well of course you don’t know what your blind spots are—otherwise they wouldn’t be blind spots! Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham created the Johari Window (get it? Joe/Harry Window) to illustrate how blind spots work.

Everyone sees our blind spots but us. That’s why it’s so important as a leader to solicit feedback regularly. Leaders who do this become more successful, and those who don’t become less successful because their blind spots keep tripping them up.
Your followers can be reluctant to give you honest feedback for two reasons: 1) they fear you and are afraid you will punish them, or 2) they love you and are afraid they will hurt your feelings.
So, here’s what to do: solicit feedback regularly, thank folks for giving it to you (even when it smarts), look for important trends, and use only what is useful.
