Friday the 13th & Other Unrealistic Fears

Friday the 13th is here again, and I always have a brief moment of fear that bad things may befall me out of nowhere. Why? Because some folks told me a long time ago that Friday the 13th brought “bad luck.”

Interesting, right? We humans are a highly adaptive species, and we can adjust to all kinds of environmental conditions. When you’re young and adults tell you that you should be afraid of something, it seems adaptive to listen to them and act on that information.

However, what if they’re misinformed and giving you bad advice? When you’re young you don’t have enough wisdom from life experience to discern accurate information from inaccurate information, so you incorporate that information into your world view at an emotional gut level to ensure your survival. If an adult authority figure said it, it must be true, right? Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

One of the most rewarding parts of my coaching and consulting work is helping leaders uncover and overcome their unrealistic fears that are holding them back from all the success and happiness that they could have and that they deserve. Some examples:

·       Not delegating responsibility and authority from the fear of “losing control”

·       Not charging enough from the fear of “rejection” or “being greedy”

·       Not being honest about your own limitations from the fear of being seen as “weak”

·       Not taking reasonable risks to fuel business growth and relying too much on the fear that lack of strict “cost control” will bankrupt your business

·       Not achieving all the financial success and happiness that you deserve from the fear that you don’t, in fact, “deserve” it

What are your unrealistic fears that are holding you back from all the success and happiness you deserve?
