How to Make Bulletproof Decisions

Leadership requires many decisions, so why not make them the best ones, i.e. “bulletproof.”
Once you have enough information, decisions come easily, and the best decisions leverage both strong rational analysis (what are the pros and cons of the various options?) and emotional analysis (how will this play with the people who must make this happen?).
As part of the rational aspect of the decision making process, keep three criteria in mind:
1. Fit with strategy
2. Financial impact
3. Ease of implementation
Here’s the 3-step decision-making technique for bulletproof decisions:
1. List the viable options for the decision.
2. List the pros and cons of each option.
3. Grade each option A-F on how good you feel about it (if you have more than one option with a top grade, then grade those options 1-10 to make a finer distinction).
Go with the option with the highest grade. In this way you’ve leveraged both strong rational analysis and the practical emotional aspects of getting the job done. Keep in mind that no decision you make will ever be perfect, but this is as “bulletproof” as you’re going to get.
