How to Keep Your "A" Players #4: A Clear Path to Success

Attracting and retaining talent is essential to scaling your business successfully, right? This is especially true for your “A” Players.

Remember, the members of your team basically want a) to achieve their personal goals, and b) to be treated fairly. Ambiguity is your enemy, so make it easy for them to visualize and achieve success by showing them a clear path to follow.

A gazillion years ago I worked as a Parole Officer for the State of Georgia. Now there are many pros and cons to working for the state, but one of the pros of the state system is a clear path for advancement. You know clearly when you come on board what the positions, requirements, and pay grades are.

Later in my career I worked as a consultant in a boutique consulting firm. The big carrots there were a) moving from salary to commission, and then b) having the opportunity to earn partnership and an equity position in the firm. Being a strong business developer was essential to achieving these goals—the path was clear.

One of my favorite quotes to live by is from the Yaqui medicine man Don Juan who said, “Follow the path with heart.” It seems only wise to make it a clear path, so make sure your business provides clear paths to success for all your team members, but especially for your “A” Players.
