Go Where You're Loved

When I first became interested in public speaking I went to a National Speakers Association introductory workshop. We moved from table to table to get advice from successful speakers.

The advice that I remember most is the guy who said, “Go where you’re loved.” This advice sounds like basic common sense, but it’s easy to forget.

If you’re in business long enough, it’s likely that some people will think you’re a hero. Unfortunately, others likely will think you’re a goat. It’s not personal; everybody won’t love you, so go where you’re loved.

When you’re working on scaling up a business, it’s easy to fall into the trap of “working hard” instead of “working smart.” For example, my early sales training advised me “don’t take ‘no’ for an answer and keep trying.” I’ve since learned that my time is my most valuable asset, so it’s better to get to “no” as soon as possible so I can spend my time on a potentially more fruitful relationship, i.e., go where I’m loved.

As one client said, “If you’re going to hunt the big game, you’ve got to know where their watering holes are.” What’s your target market, and where do the buyers of your services hang out?

That’s where you’ll be loved.
