Do a Leader's Values Matter?

Yes, and here’s why. Ultimately all decisions are driven by values and priorities. You can’t choose every option, so you choose what is important to you. This is especially important in your strategic planning efforts—you literally can’t be all things to all people.

In any organization, your values are your culture. Behavior that is valued and rewarded multiplies, and behavior that is ignored or punished diminishes. Also, the Leader Trickle Down Law is still as true as ever, and a final decision maker has great power and control in their environment. Their values and their strengths and weaknesses become the values and strengths and weaknesses of their organization.

Sustained business success and life happiness depends on building win-win relationships with others, and these relationships are based on trust; i.e., doing what you say you’ll do and caring about the other person’s happiness.

For example, would you trust the leader below to help you be financially successful and happy?

·         Is dishonest in their relationships with partners, customers, and shareholders.

·         Hires only blind loyalists and sycophants for their team rather than people who are competent in their roles.

·         Takes all the credit for any successes in their team.

·         Blames others for their mistakes.

What does this behavior tell you about this leader’s values and priorities? Would you want to be in business with them, or work for them? Would you buy stock in their company?

What are your values and priorities as a leader, and are they serving you well toward financial success and life happiness?
