Attracting and retaining talent is the name of the game for sustained financial success in business. This said, it’s so challenging that many entrepreneur leaders decide not to scale up at all.
If you do, here’s Tip #2 for keeping your “A” Players: Hire happy people for your team.
Happy people are folks who have sound basic self-care skills. Now, we all know that no one is happy every single moment of every single day, but you need to add people who basically care for themselves so they can then care about you and your organization.
Coaching unhappy people to be happy is time and money intensive. Coaching is better suited to developing less resource intensive skill sets.
While we can all feel for unhappy people, remember that you’re in a for-profit environment with many demands on your resources. While it can be done, there are better uses of your time and money that better serve the whole team and the overall good of the organization than teaching unhappy people how to be happy.
There are good ways to screen for basic happiness/self-care skills. There are good online personality assessments as well as good interviewing techniques to achieve this.
Your “A” Players are happy, productive people, and they want to be around other happy, productive people. Give this to them to keep them.
