Are The Beatles a Perfect Business Model?

The Beatles are the best-selling popular music band of all time. They must have done a lot of things right. What?

They started as a homespun “skiffle” group called The Quarrymen in a roots style of music that was popular at the time. John Lennon was the leader and driving force behind the band. John and other musicians of his generation soon became enamored with American blues and rock and roll, and they began to mimic their musical heroes.

John was soon introduced to Paul McCartney and thus began one of the most prolific songwriting duos of all time. In the American market alone, they generated 20 number one singles and 34 top ten hits. Before that era, they were known as Johnny and the Moondogs and they wore faded jeans and black leather jackets. They were known for drinking and clowning onstage and played long instrumental solos during the songs.

Enter Brian Epstein, an English entrepreneur. He took the band from a local bar band to global fame and fortune as The Beatles (strategic future vision). Epstein recognized the quality of the songs and performances of the band (product), and he made the band more “professional” to better appeal to the musical tastes of the market at that time (marketing). He dressed the band in smart matching “mod” suits of the era and had them cut out some of the clowning and limit the songs to shorter hit-oriented arrangements (tactics).

Next came a truly astounding case study of innovation. Rather than becoming stagnant by sticking to a tried-and-true formula, The Beatles continued to evolve their music product. As new albums were released it became clear they weren’t content to rest on their laurels. They broke new musical ground and set new market buying trends with albums like “Revolver” and “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.”

The Beatles were only together for 7 years. During that time, they had the right strategy that constantly evolved, the right team, and the right teamwork. They achieved financial independence and then went and did other things. How about your business?
