If you manage people, then treat them like partners in the business whether they own equity or not. An energized and engaged team member who is achieving their personal goals will be much more helpful to you in achieving your goals than a marginally compliant team member just doing what you tell them to do.

You have more power than the people who report to you, and the goal is to use that power wisely. And no, I’m not talking about dispensing with accountability. I’m talking about exercising a high level of emotional intelligence and creating win-win relationships that benefit both people. Here’s the template:

• Team member name & position:

• Supervisor name & position:

• Organization’s mission:

• Organization’s 3-year vision:

• Organization’s core values:

• Team member’s career mission:

• Team member’s 3-year vision:

• Mutually agreed upon team member’s 3-5 6-month goals:

• Team member’s current results:

• 5-Point Rating scale: 1 = Unacceptable performance 2 = Below-average Performance 3 = Average performance 4 = Above-average performance

5 = Excellent performance

• Team member’s self-ratings of living by the core values & comments

• Supervisor’s rating of team member living by the core values & comments

• Team member’s top 1-3 professional development goals & comments

• Supervisor’s feedback/coaching on professional development progress

• Team member’s self-rating of overall performance and feedback/coaching to the supervisor

• Supervisor’s rating of overall performance and feedback/coaching to the team member
